My cell phone is always with me, but I realize that there is a time and place for it. I like to think I have good mobile phone manners and know when and where I should use my phone. I’m not perfect and slip up sometimes as we all do.

I cringe sometimes when I see people using their phones improperly at the wrong times and places. I can see people around me rolling my eyes at their faux pas. I usually just think to myself, “Yikes, what are they doing?”.

Cell phones make life easier and my friends at The Mobile Shop have a large selection to choose from. No matter which cell phone you buy, just make sure you use it the right way!

What is good cell phone etiquette? I think it’s a matter of opinion and yours may differ than mine. These rules are not written in stone though maybe they should be! Check out my cell phone etiquette tips below.

1. Put your phone away at the dinner table. This is one rule I strongly enforce in my home. How can we have a nice family dinner if everyone is looking down at their phones and not talking to each other? Magic happens when people sit down to eat together and be PRESENT. There is great conversation, delicious food and that feeling of togetherness. It’s a time for bonding.

2. Turn down your phone’s volume at appointments. My phone seems to be constantly going off with notifications of incoming messages or texts. I’d have all eyes on me in waiting rooms if I were to leave the volume up on full blast. I forget sometimes, but as soon as I hear that first ding, I will quickly turn it on silent. I once sat next to a person in the doctor’s office waiting room who was playing a game on his phone on full blast. The noise was constant and annoying. Don’t do it!

3. Be aware of other people around you if you are talking on the phone in public. Use a quieter voice and never, ever put your phone on speaker. No one wants to hear your conversation and I’m sure that the person you are talking to doesn’t want it broadcasted either.

4. Turn off your phone at the movies. The movie theatre usually reminds you to do this before the movie, but I still see people texting or talking on the phone. Remember people paid money to enjoy the film so put your phone away and enjoy the movie too.

I mean, that’s what you came there to do, right?

5. Put the phone away during face to face conversations. I can’t believe I have to say this one, but it’s happened to me a few times. I’ll be talking to a friend and they pull out their phone and start Facebooking or texting. To me that says I’d rather be anywhere but here talking to you.

6. Don’t use your cell phone in public bathrooms. Because privacy. Need I say more?

7. Never text and drive. This tip is more of a safety issue, but I think it’s important to include in this list. Your life and others are at risk if you use your phone while driving. I live on a busy road and often see people driving by with the phone propped up on their steering wheel. It’s illegal and dangerous.

8. Don’t make people wait while you are on your phone. If you are in a line-up at the bank or a store and pull out your phone, you can’t pay attention to what is going on around you. I’ve seen people at the bank hold up the line when it was their turn to see the teller because they were too busy on their phones.

Like I said, I’m not perfect and I’ve made a few of these mistakes myself (except the driving one!). It’s important to understand the right way to use your phone and make the world a safer and happier place to be. It’s simply a matter of thinking before you use it! Use your best judgment.

    Put the phone away in most situations! Waitresses do not want you on your phone when ordering. Plus, it is so rude to be on it when you are just with someone. I hate talking to someone scrolling their phones.
